More about Dr. Callens
Personal story: "I was born in Lakewood California to two young free spirits. At the age of 14 we moved to Tucumcari, New Mexico, where they owned and operated the world famous Tee Pee Curio shop. In High School my interests were Band, Theater, Dirt Bikes and Hot Rods. My interest in health care came from a radio commercial on KQAY asking people to apply for a program where they would put you through school for a promise to work at the local hospital afterwards. I was not selected for this program. I received my certificate as an LPN/LVN from Eastern New Mexico University and began my first nursing job working Weekends in Santa Rosa New Mexico at 19. I continued nursing school during the week and was in the first graduating RN class of Clovis Community College. I moved to Lubbock at 20 and began work at the Methodist Hospital Children’s Emergency Room, where I would work for 4 years. I met the love of my life on my first day of work, and after four years of pestering, she finally agreed to marry me. I went on to work in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit, where I did a bit of helicopter transports accompanied by a great deal of vomiting. Working nights and taking morning classes at Texas Tech, I earned a Bachelor’s degree in nursing, and on round two of Med School applications, was accepted into UTMB Galveston. After four beach years and the birth of my first Daughter Avery, we headed to Fort Worth where I was a Resident in the John Peter Smith Family Medicine Program. Sawyer, my second daughter, was born there. At the suggestion of fellow resident Lindsay McBride, I did a rotation in Liberty, where I would move just a few weeks ahead of Hurricane Ike. I am reminded how long I have been here when patients I have seen as kids come back to see me with kids of their own."
More about Holly Benson, Family Nurse Practitioner
Why LMSC?: "I have always loved science and people, the combination of the two simply created a career I love! The LMSC has been a place that feels like home and I feel like I am caring for my own family. The small town feeling coupled with getting to watch patients grow up and transition through life is truly a joy. Being in a small town and providing care for any issues that arise in a family setting is challenging and fun- from illness to injury to chronic diseases. Developing a relationship with the community and getting to serve the Liberty area as family has been the greatest and most fulfilling achievement of my career."
